How much does shower regrouting cost in Adelaide?

Nobody in Adelaide prints a regrouting price, including us. Here is what the market data says, what moves the number, and how to avoid paying for a regrout when a clean would do.

Key facts

Shower regrouting in Adelaide typically lands in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars. Jobs posted on the Airtasker marketplace for Adelaide show a median of about $545, with the middle half between roughly $312 and $615 (October 2026). Specialist regrouting firms quote per job after an inspection, and so do we, with a licensed tiler doing the work. If the grout is sound but dirty, a clean ($149 for a shower) is the much cheaper fix.

What the market says

Regrouting is a quote-on-inspection trade, so published numbers are scarce. The best public data is the marketplace where homeowners post the job and tradespeople bid:

What moves the price

  • How much grout comes out. A full recess (three walls, floor, niche) is several times the raking of two problem walls. Raking out is the slow part.
  • Tile size. Mosaic and small-format tiles have far more grout per square metre than 300 × 600 tiles.
  • Silicone. Replacing the corner and base silicone is normally included in a shower regrout and adds time.
  • Grout type. Epoxy grout is much harder to remove than cement grout and costs more to replace.
  • What’s underneath. Loose or drummy tiles, or signs of water behind the wall, change the job from a regrout to a repair, or stop it altogether until a waterproofer has looked.
  • Access and cure. Upstairs ensuites, one-bathroom households that need the shower back fast, and jobs that need two visits all add cost.

Regrout, or just clean?

This is the question that saves the most money. Dark, stained or mouldy grout that is still hard and continuous does not need regrouting; it needs a proper clean, and if it stays patchy afterwards, colour sealing gives it one even colour. That combination is $338 for a shower recess, with no grout coming out. Regrouting is for grout that is cracked, crumbling, powdery, soft or missing. The regrouting page has a table to help you tell them apart, and photos sent with a quote request get you a straight answer before anyone comes out.

Why we quote it on inspection

Two reasons. First, the range above: a published “from” price for regrouting would either be meaningless or mislead you. Second, licensing. In South Australia regrouting is treated as building work, so we only have it done by a licensed tiler, and the tiler sets the price after seeing the recess. Cleaning and sealing are not building work, which is why those prices can sit on the page.

How to get a fair regrouting quote

  1. Send photos of the whole recess and close-ups of the worst grout and the silicone.
  2. Say whether the shower leaks or there are stains on the other side of the wall.
  3. Ask whether silicone replacement is included.
  4. Ask for the tiler’s licence number; you can check it with Consumer and Business Services.
  5. Ask how long before the shower can be used.

Regrouting cost questions

How much does it cost to regrout a shower in Adelaide?

Regrouting jobs posted on the Airtasker marketplace for Adelaide have a median price around $545, with the middle half of jobs between about $312 and $615 (October 2026). Dedicated regrouting companies quote per job after an inspection and generally don’t publish prices. We quote the same way: after an inspection, with a licensed tiler doing the work.

Why don’t you publish a regrouting price?

Because the job varies more than cleaning does. One recess might need two walls raked out; another needs floor, walls, niche and all the silicone, plus a couple of loose tiles re-fixed. The tiler has to see it. Cleaning and sealing are predictable enough to price from a list, which is why those prices are on the page.

Is regrouting cheaper than re-tiling?

Much cheaper. Re-tiling a shower means stripping tiles, usually redoing the waterproofing, and tiling again, which runs into the thousands. Regrouting keeps the tiles and replaces only the grout and silicone. It is the right fix when the tiles and the waterproofing underneath are still sound.

Can I just clean it instead of regrouting?

If the grout is hard and in one piece, yes, and it is far cheaper: a shower clean is $149 and colour sealing adds $189 for one even, sealed colour. If the grout is cracked, powdery, soft or missing, cleaning won’t fix it. Send photos and we’ll tell you which you need.

Does regrouting need a licence in South Australia?

Regrouting is treated as building work in South Australia, so we only have it done by a licensed tiler. Cleaning and sealing are not building work and need no licence.

How long does a shower regrout take?

Typically half a day to a day for a standard recess, then 24 to 48 hours before the shower can be used while the grout and silicone cure. Larger showers or ones with repairs take longer.

Cracked or crumbling grout?

Send photos with your quote request and we’ll tell you whether it needs a clean or a regrout.
