Shower regrouting and grout repair in Adelaide

When grout is cracked, crumbling or missing, cleaning won’t bring it back. We quote regrouting after an inspection, and a licensed tiler does the work.

Key facts

Regrouting is quoted after an inspection, not from a price list, and is carried out by a licensed tiler. Cleaning and sealing need no licence in South Australia; regrouting and grout repair are treated as building work, so a licensed tiler does them. If your grout is dark but sound, you probably need a clean ($149 for a shower) rather than a regrout, and we’ll tell you so.

Clean or regrout? How to tell

What a shower regrout involves

  1. Inspection and quote. The tiler looks at the recess, checks for loose tiles and signs of water behind them, measures the grout to be replaced and gives you a fixed quote. You can send photos first for a steer.
  2. Rake out. The old grout is cut out of the joints to a proper depth, by hand or with an oscillating tool, and the old silicone is removed from the corners and base.
  3. Clean and dry. Dust and debris are vacuumed out, the joints cleaned, and the area left to dry.
  4. Regrout. New grout is worked into the joints, shaped and cleaned off the tiles. Colour is matched to the existing grout or changed if you prefer.
  5. Re-silicone. New silicone is run along the corners, the base and around fittings.
  6. Cure. Allow around 24 to 48 hours before using the shower; the tiler confirms the time.

Grout repair on floors and walls

Not every job is a full regrout. Cracked or missing sections in a kitchen floor, a hallway or a splashback can be repaired on their own, with the new grout matched as closely as possible to the old. The join is rarely invisible on very old grout; a clean and colour seal of the whole area afterwards gives one even colour if that matters to you.

What it costs

There is no fixed price on this page, on purpose. A regrout can be one wall of a small recess or a whole floor-to-ceiling shower with failed silicone and a couple of loose tiles, and the two jobs are hours apart. The tiler quotes after seeing it. What we don’t do

  • Leaking-shower repairs where the waterproofing has failed
  • Waterproofing membranes
  • Re-tiling or replacing cracked tiles
  • Epoxy grout removal (possible, but a different job; ask)

Tile and grout cleaning and sealing are not building work, so no licence is needed for them in South Australia. Regrouting and grout repair are treated as building work, so they are quoted separately and carried out by a licensed tiler.

Regrouting questions

How much does shower regrouting cost?

We don’t publish a fixed price for regrouting, because the job depends on how much grout has to come out, the tile size, whether the silicone needs replacing and what is found underneath. It is quoted after an inspection. As a guide, Adelaide regrouting jobs posted on marketplaces have a median around $545, with most between about $300 and $650. Our cost guide explains what moves the number.

Who does the regrouting?

A licensed tiler. In South Australia regrouting is treated as building work, so it is not done by the cleaner who does our cleaning and sealing jobs. You still book and pay through us, and we stay responsible for the booking.

Does my shower need regrouting or just cleaning?

If the grout is sound but dark, stained or mouldy, cleaning (and colour sealing if it’s patchy) is the answer and much cheaper. If grout is cracked, crumbling, powdery, soft when you press it, or missing in places, cleaning won’t fix it and it needs regrouting. If you’re not sure, send photos with your quote request and we’ll tell you which.

Will regrouting fix a leaking shower?

Sometimes, if water is getting through failed grout or silicone only. If the waterproofing membrane behind the tiles has failed, regrouting alone won’t fix it and a waterproofing specialist is needed. The tiler will tell you what they see at the inspection. We don’t do waterproofing or leak repairs.

Do you do shower sealing?

It depends what you mean. Sealing the grout in a shower so it absorbs less water and soap: yes, that is our grout sealing service, added to a clean. Sealing a leaking shower (waterproofing, epoxy or injection sealing of a failed membrane): no. If the leak is only failed grout or silicone, a regrout can fix it; if the membrane has failed, you need a waterproofing specialist, and the tiler will tell you which at the inspection.

Is the silicone replaced too?

Usually, yes. Mould grows into old silicone and can’t be cleaned out, so a shower regrout normally includes cutting out the old silicone in the corners and along the base and replacing it. It’s included in the quote.

How long before I can use the shower?

New grout and silicone need time to cure before they get wet. Allow around 24 to 48 hours; the tiler will confirm the time for the products used.
